Point-of-Load (POL) Switching Regulators

As modern digital ICs (FPGAs, DSPs, ASICs) require increasingly lower voltages (3.3V, 1.8V, 1.2V) and higher, faster current transients, routing power from a central supply across a PCB becomes problematic due to trace resistance and inductance. Point-of-Load (POL) regulators solve this by being placed immediately next to the component they power.

Our non-isolated POL switching regulators are highly efficient step-down (buck) converters. Unlike traditional linear regulators (like the classic 7805) that dissipate excess voltage as heat, our switching POLs operate at efficiencies exceeding 90%. This drastically reduces thermal load on the board, eliminating the need for bulky heat sinks and saving valuable PCB real estate. They are essential for modern distributed power architectures in telecommunications, networking equipment, and advanced industrial controls.

Are POL regulators isolated?

No, POL regulators are non-isolated. They share a common ground between the input and output. They are typically used downstream from an isolated DC-DC converter that provides the main 12V or 5V intermediate bus voltage.

Are they pin-compatible with LM78xx linear regulators?

Yes! We offer a specific line of 3-pin SIP POL regulators designed as direct, drop-in replacements for standard LM78xx linear regulators. You can easily upgrade an old, hot-running board to high-efficiency switching power without redesigning the PCB.
